Low back pain is one of the most common and costly musculoskeletal disorders in developed and developing countries.
More than 70 to 80% of people suffer from low back pain at least once in their life.
Those patients show deficits in proprioception, neuromuscular coordination and balance as well as dysfunctional movement control. Exercise therapy has been recognized as an effective method for treatment of low back pain. Despite this, it is not known which exercise programs lead to the best results.
In that context, Dr Bojinca’s team (Bucharest) presented a study at the “Congress of Rheumatology of the European League against Rheumatism» on the interest of the HUBER® device in the treatment of chronic low back pain compared to a classic rehabilitation program.
That study* involved 40 low back pain patients randomly divided into 2 training programs: HUBER® program or classic program (Control)“.
Various assessments were carried out before and after 15 sessions:
■ Pain (Scale from 0 to 10 / 0: no pain; 10: unbearable pain), ■ Muscle strength and mobility of the lumbar spine, ■ Quality of life (Quebec Questionnaire).
Extract from the Quebec survey: Do you have trouble today with:
1. Getting out of bed 2. Sleeping through the night 3. Turning over in bed 4. Driving a car 5. Standing up for 20-30 minutes …
The patient is asked to rate from 0 to 5 (0: no effort to do; 5: impossible to do) 20 activities of daily life. The final outcome is obtained by the sum of the scoring of the degree of difficulty in performing the 20 daily activities. These outcomes score within the range of 0 and 100, corresponds to the level of functional disability, with higher numbers representing greater levels of disability.
Results show that the standardized exercise program with the HUBER® device is effective, well tolerated and provides improvements in patients with chronic low back pain. Compared to a conventional exercise program, the program using the HUBER® device allows a significantly greater improvement in pain (HUBER 42.6%; control 24%), in core muscles strength (HUBER® 42.6%; control 24%) and in quality of life (HUBER® 52.8%; control 25.6%).
The chronic low back pain management involves a wide variety of methods, including exercise physiotherapy. Good results were reported for various physical exercise programs, some in combination with other interventions to target different deficits. The HUBER® system allows you to work on proprioception, neuromuscular coordination, balance but also on muscle strengthening. Results of that study open perspectives for rehabilitation programs for low back pain patients.
